Diastasis of abdominal muscles is a separation of the oblong abdominal muscles, visually characterised as protruding, uneven tummy, which is not correctable by means of healthy nutrition and sports. The most often diastasis develops in post-partum females.

What is a diastasis?

Diastasis is a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles This diagnosis is made in females after pregnancy and birth giving. Muscle separation during pregnancy is considered normal as this is a result of growing foetus, placenta and strained abdominal muscles.

In diastasis the left- and right-sided muscles separate at the linea alba of the abdomen. Statistics demonstrate that muscle diastasis is a very common condition affecting as many as up to 70 percent of all post partum females, many post partum females suffer from the diastasis continuously.

When a correction of the abdominal diastasis is required?

Usually a severe muscle separation is visible with naked eye – a tummy is slightly saggy and becomes bulged after meals or drinking fluids, sometimes it looks like during pregnancy. Unfortunately this condition cannot be corrected by means of the diets and sports, eventually a diastasis may lead to health problems – back pain, hernias or urine incontinence.

Correction of abdominal diastasis is required to restore the quality of life or a nice body shape.

As sometimes for the patients it is difficult to understand the cause causing a prominent tummy – whether it is nutrition, lack of physical activity or muscle separation, we kindly invite you visit NEWMAN Aesthetic clinic for a consultation with a plastic surgeons to find out the true cause.

How a correction of the abdominal diastasis is done?

A correction of the split muscles is made using a 10–15 cm long incision under the fold and consolidating the abdominal wall above and under the navel. Strengthened muscles restore the appearance of flat and tight tummy a waist circumference is also reduced. If the patient underwent Caesarean section surgery the same incision is used for the correction of abdominal muscle diastasis.

The navel position remains unchanged, however in case the patient surfers from a navel-related discomfort, a navel correction is possible during the surgery. This surgery can be combined with abdominoplasty

Post-surgical period and care

You should allocate sufficient time for recovery after the surgery. You will need a couple of weeks before returning back to your work. Swelling in the abdominal area will be felt for about one month, it can be controlled by wearing a compress garment; this should be worn during the first month after the surgery, except when taking shower.

You will need several months or up to one year to see a final result, however, it is worth to wait, after complete healing you will have a perfect waist. The results are long-lasting, unless you decide to have a baby or gain some weight.
