When do you need plastic surgery of the upper eyelids?
Eyelid plastic surgery is one of the most popular surgical procedure that requires especially short post-operative period. Surgeries of such type are carried out for both aesthetical and medical reasons. First of all the sagging eyelids make a person looking older than their years and tired, they look less joyful and positive than usually is. On the other hand sagging eyelids interfere with vision and cause different level of daily discomfort. In addition, saggy eyelids for women limit their possibility to put on a make-up and to create the individual image.
Swollen and saggy skin and “pouches” under the eyes also make a person looking older than their years and create impression of enthusiasm shortage. Genetic predisposition can be the reason why even young people scarcely reaching their twenties may face this problem. Sagging skin as a result of ageing as well as folds and excesses of skin under the eyes also make a person looking substantially older and change completely expression of the face.
Changes of the upper and/or lower eyelids that have occurred because of natural ageing process or genetic predisposition can be successfully corrected surgically. Eyelid plastics open the glance and restore the appearance of a person ho feels rested, vigorous and in high mood.
In each individual case a physician decides whether the surgery is indicated and needed.
How the upper eyelid plastic surgery is done?
The plastics of the upper eyelid usually is done under a local anaesthesia, however a general anaesthesia can also be applied. An incision along the natural curve of the upper eye-lid is made during the surgery. A surgeon removes exactly removes the excessive amount of skin and lipid tissue; the sutures are applied on the incision and covered with a special plaster.
How the lower eyelid plastic surgery is done?
Depending on the individual situation of the patient and the extent of the surgery decided during a consultation, different surgical methods can be used for the lower eyelid plasty. When there is a need to remove the accumulated lipid aggregations (hernias) only, an incision i made in the inner eyelid side. The lipid tissue is removed or re-distributed. In case of an excessive skin and certain level of looseness, an incision is made just along the line of the lower eyelashes. A more even relief of the lower eyelids is created.
Correction of the upper and lower eyelids can be combined during the same surgical intervention. The average duration of the surgery is 1-2 hours. The notable change in person’s appearance is achieved and as the incisions in both cases are made along the skin folds after healing they are invisible.
The post-surgical period
Eyelid plastic surgery is a quickly done surgery associated with a very low risk, however, like any other intervention it can cause adverse effects. All these aspects you will discuss with your doctor before the surgery and thorough implementation of doctor’s instructions will help to reduce probability of such events.
After the surgery on the same or next day you will be allowed to return back home. In order to protect your eyes against sun and wind you should wear sun glasses during the first days after the surgery. You may feel some tension in the eyelid area. Cold compresses are recommended; also it is necessary to keep your head in an elevated position while sleeping.
Swelling and haemorrhages disappear in about 2-3 weeks after the surgery.
You may return to your working activities in some 10-14 days after the surgery, however you should avoid lifting, bending and other physical activities leading to blood pressure elevations for at lest 4 weeks after the surgery.
