What is inverted nipple and why does this condition develop?

An inverted nipple is a nipple that appears to be pulled inwards of a breast rather than pointing outward. This condition can develop because of different reasons:

  • Genetics: Inverted nipples are often congenital; about 10 –20 percent of females are born with inverted nipples. Often such condition can be a result of shorter than usual milk ducts.
  • Trauma: inverted nipple can be caused by different breast injuries such as heavy bang.
  • Age: elderly people can develop inverted nipples because of reduced skin elasticity or muscle weakening.
  • Breastfeeding: some women can experience temporary nipple retraction because of breastfeeding, especially if nipple position in baby’s mouth is inappropriate.

Inverted nipple correction can be recommended in cases when the nipples cause discomfort or certain physiological obstacles.

The main reasons requiring inverted nipple correction are as follows:
  • Aggravated breastfeeding: when the nipples are difficult to reach or they are not clearly visible; this can lead to difficulty breastfeeding and aggravate breastfeeding process;
  • Discomfort: inverted nipples can cause physical discomfort in some people – namely pain, itching or burning sensation;
  • Psychological problems: inverted nipples can cause stress, lack of self-confidence, interfere with satisfaction in sex.

If inverted nipples cause anxiety, surgical correction of the inverted nipples can be one of potential decisions.

How surgical correction of the inverted nipples is done?

Surgical correction of the inverted nipples is a minor surgical intervention that is carried out under local anaesthesia. The surgery duration can be 1 to 2 hours. A physician makes very small skin incisions in the nipple area and pulls a nipple outward by forming anatomically correct nipple size and location.

Post-surgical period and care

The patient can be discharged immediately after the procedure. It is important to avoid strain and physical load that can affect your breasts for at least one week after the surgery. Increased nipple sensitivity or visible increase in nipple size can be noticed after the surgery.
