When is required labiaplasty?

Many females are concerned about the appearance of their labia. The size of labia can change with age or after childbirth or trauma, in some cases disproportional labia can develop during the puberty period.

Hypertrophic labia can cause physical problems or even pain during certain physical activities such as jogging or cycling. Hypertrophic labia can be a reason of aesthetic concern when they limit wearing of close-fitting sportswear or a swimming suit, they can also be related to psychological issues affecting your intimate relations.

Labiaplasty can ease your everyday life and support your self-confidence.

How is labiaplasty done?

Labiaplasty is an intimate, delicate topic. Therefore, you will discuss the expected result with a physician during the individual consultation. The surgery is done under general anaesthesia and lasts up to about 1-2 hours.

During the surgery the tissue of your minor labia will be resected to restrict their protrusion outside the major labia and asymmetry will be corrected. The absorbable sutures are usually used to close the incisions, thus, reducing the probability of scars.

Labioplasty is not limited by the correction of minor labia. Some women may want  to have a larger appearing labia majora. This is achieved applying a lipid tissue transfer technique – the labia are supplemented with the lipid tissue taken from other body sites.

Post-surgical period and care

You may be able to go home the same day. You may need up to 2 weeks off work to recover. It can take a couple of months for the skin to fully heal.

It’s normal after a labiaplasty to have soreness, bruising and swelling for up to 2 weeks. During this time, peeing and sitting may also be uncomfortable. You’ll be given painkillers to help with this.

Careful post-surgical care, hygiene and infection prevention are very important. Wearing loose underwear is recommended during the post-operative period. You should abstain from sexual intercourse for 6 weeks after the surgery and avoid any other strenuous physical activity for up to 12 weeks.
